Teenagers spend a lot of time with their friends, and less time with their family. This makes them more susceptible to the influences of their friend circle. It is important to remember that teenage friends can have a positive influence therefore help them find friends that have similar interests and views as those you are trying to develop in your teen, including doing well in sports, music or school, having respect for elder and love for younger and avoiding drug use, smoking and drinking, etc.

During teenage, children practice risk-taking behaviors as they are trying to find their own identity and become more independent. Some teens will risk being grounded, losing their parents' trust, or even facing jail time, just to try and fit in or feel like they have a group of friends they can identify with and who accept them. With bad friend circle teens may continue the slide into problems with the law, substance abuse, school problems, authority defiance, violence, etc. The need for acceptance, approval, and belonging is vital during the teen years. Teens who feel isolated or rejected by their friends are more likely to engage in risky behaviors. In this condition, friend's pressure can impair good judgment and fuel risk-taking behavior, drawing a teen away from the family and positive influences.
Parents should talk with their teens if it seems that teens are being negatively influenced by their friend to drink, smoke or experiment with drug use. In this situation parents should set up an appointment with a medical professional with experience in dealing with teenagers with this problem.
